Meet Our Doctor

Dr Amy Edwards

Ethan Abrams, DVM

Dr. Abrams grew up in a small town in southwestern Connecticut where he developed his love of animals. He graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University in 2012. During veterinary school he worked as both an assistant at a local veterinary hospital and as an educator at the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, Connecticut. Immediately following graduation he furthered his training with a small animal internship at Alameda East Veterinary Hospital in Denver, Colorado where his exposure was broad working among many subspecialties of small animal medicine. After internship, Dr. Abrams moved to Brooklyn, New York where he was a small animal general practitioner at Hope Animal Hospital. Dr. Abrams then elected to continue to expand his veterinary expertise at Animal Specialty and Emergency Center in Los Angeles, California. There he served as an attending emergency clinician working with veterinary specialties in emergency/critical care, surgery, oncology, cardiology and internal medicine. He was also responsible for the training of interns in both their rotating and specialty career paths. Dr. Abrams moved to Asheville in 2018 and returned to general practice at Charlotte Street Animal Hospital. He is very excited to serve the community in a role that he feels is needed at Urgent Care AVL. Dr. Abrams has a wonderful wife and two beautiful twin girls, he deeply enjoys sports, working with his hands (predominantly woodworking), cooking and time with his family.

John Scully, DVM

Dr. Scully is a local, having been born and raised in Asheville. After attending UNCA, he graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in 2014. He then lived in Richmond, Virginia, for six years, where he worked in general practice before eventually transitioning into emergency medicine at Animal Medical Center.
During that time, he developed a passion for emergency medicine and surgery, as well as helping clients make the best decisions for their pets regardless of finances or other limitations.
In 2020, he had the opportunity to move back to Asheville to practice general medicine at Charlotte Street Animal Hospital, where he first met Dr. Abrams. After Hurricane Helene, he missed the fast pace of emergency medicine and joined Junaluska Animal Hospital while also helping with relief shifts at many local clinics.
Those experiences helped him understand the significant need for an urgent care hospital in Asheville to bridge the gap between busy general practices and 24-hour emergency clinics, and he is excited to be part of AVL Urgent Care.
When he is not working, you’ll find Dr. Scully enjoying the mountains with his wife and new baby boy or traveling whenever possible. He is happiest when fly fishing secluded saltwater flats throughout the Bahamas.
